Ryan: Never said Sanchez won job

September 13 - The Sports Xchange

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan disputed Mark Sanchez's claim that he won the starting quarterback job.

Ryan's comment came a day after Sanchez told the NFL Network that there was "no doubt" he won the job before tearing the labrum in his right shoulder.

"I never said he won the competition," Ryan said in a conference call Friday. "That's his opinion. It's not about a company line. Apparently, if that's what he said then that's his opinion. Again there is that ongoing competition."

Ryan said he had no problem with Sanchez thinking he won the job because he wants players to have confidence in their abilities.

Sanchez also said that he was confident that he would play this season. Ryan agreed that it is possible Sanchez could return later in the year.

"If we didn't think it'd be realistic that Mark would get on the field, then he would be put on IR, and that's not the case," Ryan said.

Rookie Geno Smith will continue starting for the Jets.
